Abnormally Funny People by KATE COPSTICK Tuesday 9th August 2005
This show is exactly what it says it is - the five comics are variously abnormal and all funny. There are pros and cons to this sort of mini-ghetto-type show, but here all the comics are on stage all the time, so they bounce off each other (not literally, of course, except for Chris McCausland, but he's blind so it is only to be expected). They insult each other gloriously as they go through their acts. And the acts are good.
Steve Day is tall and amuslingly bemused by much of life. His spot is a smart mix of likeably personal material, about being deaf and the vagaries of sharing a house with a blind bloke and a load of short people. Simon Minty's take on disabled access is sharp and laugh-out-loud funny. Liz Carr's humour is right on the edge and fabulously black. Chris McCausland does a nice line in 'grumpy old men' and has some terrific material about TV for a man who can't see what's on. Tanyalee Davis is a great big comedy presence in a tiny body. her claim to be mixed race is brilliantly staked and her guide to use of a catheter is hilarious.
